The Ormen Lange partners have made a final investment decision for a subsea compression project on one of Norway's largest gas fields. Plan for development and operation was sent to the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy today, September 20th.
The project will increase production with an additional 30-50 billion cubic meters of natural gas, which increases Ormen Lange's total gas recovery rate from 75 to 85%. The gas will be fed into the Norwegian gas export system, ensuring a continued and reliable supply to Europe.

Two wet gas compressor systems will be installed on the seabed at a depth of 900 meters close the wellheads,  increasing gas flow from the reservoir into the wells. The 120 km distance from shore to the installations sets a new world record for subsea compression power step-out.  The project pushes technical boundaries and strengthens Norway's position as a global center for subsea development.

Ormen Lange is among the fields in Norway with the lowest carbon emissions. Offshore power consumption comes from hydropower and the gas is treated in a closed system at Nyhamna gas plant. "Ormen Lange Subsea Compression" will contribute large extra revenues to the Norwegian state. The total project cost is estimated at NOK 12.1 billion.

Ormen Lange Partnership: Shell (operator), Petoro, Equinor, INEOS and Vår Energi.
